Louisville, KY --Regulars of the Great Harvest Bread Co. can’t believe their eyes! Imagine walking into your neighborhood bakery to find bunnies in the mixing bowls, on the kneading table, hanging out on the bread racks, and even coming out of the ovens!
Well, Bread Bunnies that is. Real bunnies or Bread Bunnies, the event is having quite an impact.
It’s a one-of-a-kind Great Harvest tradition. The Bread Bunny creation is the creative product of a business that prides itself on milling whole wheat everyday on it’s giant stone mill and baking from scratch.
“Making bunnies for all of the children brings us such joy,” says Dennis Thompson, owner of the Louisville, Kentucky Great Harvest. “We get the biggest kick out of watching people fall in love with our bunnies. Customers will often come back into the bakery to share their bunny stories. It’s great being a part of Easter memories,” Thompson says.
The kneaders and bakers of Great Harvest call the Bread Bunny “Honey Bunny,” a name that came naturally for a bunny made from Great Harvest’s signature whole grain bread, Honey Whole Wheat. Kids love the Bread Bunnies and parents appreciate their nutritional benefits—each Honey Bunny is made from only five pure and simple ingredients (all of which you can pronounce!): fresh ground whole wheat flour, yeast, water, salt, and honey.
It’s a laborious process that involves the hand kneading and hand designing of the bunny’s body, head, four legs, tail, and of course, two ears. But the time spent handcrafting these Bread Bunnies (some 1,000 bunnies are expected this month!) is well worth it. You’d be hard-pressed to find an Easter treat as nutritious and delicious as this year’s Honey Bunny—they’re real crowd pleasers! It’s even been reported that some kids pass up their Easter candy to go for their Easter morning Honey Bunny. A healthy, whole grain alternative to candy, or a great addition to the Easter meal table—either way, there’s lots of fun, smiles, and whole grain goodness to go around!
Bread Bunnies are being born every day this month. Hop on in to Great Harvest and see them for yourself. Their creation begins on the kneading table at 8 AM; fresh Bread Bunnies will start hopping out of the oven at 10 AM! (Store opens at 7 AM with sweets, coffee, and great smelling bread in and out of the oven.)
